There are few more indomitable journalists covering the tech industry than Kara Swisher. For the past four years, on behalf of Times Opinion, she has grilled tech titans, regulators and politicians, covered the biggest stories, and ensured accountability in a key part of modern life where there is too often very little. Her experience, intellect and fearlessness is unmatched. Which is why it is bittersweet to announce today that Kara will be leaving Times Opinion next month to pursue new projects at Vox.
Since her arrival in 2018, Kara has written columns and newsletters that lay out how to fight the information wars, to create a more ethical Silicon Valley, and why the public is paying for Mark Zuckerberg’s education. In late 2020, Times Opinion launched “Sway,” a podcast in which Kara explored the intersection of power and technology. She sparred with Elon Musk and Stacey Abrams, traded jokes with Jon Stewart and Samantha Bee and interrogated the Parler C.E.O. as the January 6th Capitol attack unfolded. She collaborated with her incredible team on more than 160 conversations, frequently making news and always keeping audiences engaged with her direct questions and signature no-holds-barred approach. As one listener tweeted: “Clarity + honesty = respect for the person interviewed AND the audience. @karaswisher is a master of the form.”
Along the way, Kara has been supported by a talented group of editors, audio producers and engineers at The Times. We will have more news on the Sway team’s next move in coming weeks.
The last edition of Kara’s newsletter will publish June 30, and her last episode of “Sway” will drop in late July. Please join us in wishing Kara all the best.
