We’ve been keeping a close eye on Apple, and it seems that the company is already working on a MacBook Air 2022 laptop, which will likely be sporting the new M2 chipset and an overhauled design to bring it up to modern standards.
MacRumors has suggested that the MacBook Air will feature a new M2 chip, which will be an updated version of the M1 chip. While it’s likely that it will include the same number of CPU cores, overall improvement to the architecture will ensure that it runs faster. Reports also suggest it could see an increased GPU count from 8 to 10.
It also seems that the latest MacBook Air will look a lot different than what we’re used to, with Apple leaker Jon Prosser claiming that the MacBook Pro will come in multiple colours, in a similar fashion to the iMac.

Release date
As suggested by the title, it’s expected that the Apple MacBook Air will launch in 2022, though it’s not clear when during the year.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors) says that the MacBook Air will launch in the late second quarter or the early third quarter, which puts the date between August and September.
Other rumours have suggested that the laptop will come out in the middle of next year, though Apple has not made any claims about the release date yet.
Price
Since there has been little information on the pricing of the MacBook Air, it’s hard to gauge how much the new machine will cost. However, Apple does typically retain a similar price point when moving on to new laptop generations, which could mean the MacBook Air 2022 will start around £999 at launch.
We also expect that there will be more expensive configurations, with variables like storage and chipsets likely to change the price.
Specs
It’s expected that the MacBook Air 2022 will feature a new Apple M2 chip, which will be replacing the M1 chip. Despite the M2 having the same number of CPU cores as its predecessor, the improved architecture is expected to offer faster processing speeds.
We may also see an increased GPU count from 8 to 10. An increased GPU core count would mean that the lightweight laptop would be better equipped to handle heavier workloads, specifically creative tasks like video editing.
There haven’t been many reports on whether Apple will alter its storage and memory offerings, so it’s likely that Apple won’t change these specs for the next MacBook Air. The base model currently sports 256GB storage and 8GB memory.
And since the latest MacBook Pro set a precedent with the inclusion of Mini-LED displays, the 2022 machine could adopt the same technology. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro also benefits from this technology, so it would make sense for Apple to move it over onto its latest laptop release.

Design
Several rumours have surfaced that point towards an overhauled design for the MacBook Air 2022. It’s expected to be thinner and lighter, which will put more emphasis on the portability factor.
Currently, the MacBook Air weighs in at 1.29kg, but there are other laptops on the market that come closer to 1kg, so it’ll be interesting to see if Apple can come up with an even lighter design. Since the Macbook Air doesn’t even need a fan to operate, Apple does have some wiggle room to take advantage of in this respect.
Leaker Jon Prosser has come up with multiple renders for the MacBook Air; the colour options and sleeker design will give the laptops more personality and differentiate them from the other laptops Apple make. You can check out some of the renders just below.

It’s also been reported that MagSafe charging could make a comeback, providing a secure attachment when charging the laptop. In terms of ports, Apple is expected to stick with USB-C, with the rectangle-shaped USB-A connections unlikely to return.
